Product Description
“A stunning book.”—Oliver Sacks Charting the intellectual history of the emerging biology of mind, Eric R. Kandel illuminates how behavioral psychology, cognitive psychology, neuroscience, and molecular biology have converged into a powerful new science of mind. This science now provides nuanced insights into normal mental functioning and disease, and simultaneously opens pathways to more effective healing.
Driven by vibrant curiosity, Kandel’s personal quest to understand memory is threaded throughout this absorbing history. Beginning with his childhood in Nazi-occupied Vienna, In Search of Memory chronicles Kandel’s outstanding career from his initial fascination with history and psychoanalysis to his groundbreaking work on the biological process of memory, which earned him the Nobel Prize.
A deft mixture of memoir and history, modern biology and behavior, In Search of Memory traces how a brillian… More >>

Perhaps in the name of humility Dr. Kandel persuades me that by tying in with a variety of more diligent scientists, he managed to win a third of a Nobel Prize. He also persuades me that whining, in-group elitism and greed will mark forever his type.

Its a nice book for those interested in neurobiology. Its well written and no background knowledge is required.
The best work of the author is on the memory, how short term and long term memory works, and how short term memory is converted to longterm one. The experiments give convincing evidence for the hypotheses.
The explanations of various dis-orders/feelings from neuro-transmitter point of view is simply amazing.
I wanted to give 4.5. The author delves too much into his personal life, which can be cut short to make the book into 300 pages. The personal part is irrelevant to the “search of memory”.
My advice is: skip chapters 2,3, if u r only interested in the science part.
A more optimistic picture of future research on consciousness would have been better. This is because, “Up from Dragons” by Dorion Sagan gives a hint at what consciousness might be.

Eric Kandel’s marvelous book was simply exhilirating! He has artfully woven his life work of cutting-edge memory research together with his memories of key events in his own life (e.g. Nazi-dominated Vienna in the 1930’s. This is compelling reading and makes doing science exciting!
